OpenWindows 3 - SunOS 4.1.4
Screen Shots
OpenWindows 3 is included with SunOS 4.1.4 (AKA Solaris 1.1.2). This
version is using TME 0.6's Sun-4 emulation mode that works properly with
color.
OpenWindows 3 starting up.
Probably the biggest visible difference over OpenWindows 2 is that
is it includes a help system.
By default a console, a file manager window, and the desktop help are
launched at startup.
Pressing the "help" key on the Sun keyboard can bring up a help dialog
with help about the currently selected item. (TME did not map the help
key to the PC keyboard so I had to add that)
If you want to see the entire help file, I converted it to a PDF: desktop.pdf
The properties here have color settings and adds international settings
for management of number and date formatting.
Apparently the Sun-4 hardware included the ability to play sound. This
version of SunOS comes with some sample sounds and an audio player. Needless
to say this didn't work in the emulator. I don't even think NetBSD even
has an audio system.
And a few of the OpenWindows 3 apps.
An interesting "Periodic table" of OpenWindows GUI elements and some
other demo programs.
Almost browsing the web with SunOS 4.1.4. Never could get networking
to work in TME. Probably for the best, you don't want to know what the
web looks like in Netscape 4 these days.
Note that Netscape uses a completely different UI widget set from that
of OpenWindows.
Exiting OpenWindows.
