MicroImages X Server
Linux via MicroImages X Server
As described in the Redhat 5.0 section, the X-windowing display can
be independent of the machine running the application programs. The MicroImages
X Server for Microsoft Windows 95/NT is a good example of this.
This X-server is running on Windows 95, accepting drawing requests
and returning input to a remote Linux computer. The xterm program was launched
on the Linux computer and its output is being directed to the Windows 95
X-server over a network connection. In turn xterm is launching the calculator
application.
Netscape Communicator runs great on this X-server. Even with animated
graphics.
The MicroImages X Server program uses a window manager called TWM (tiny
window manager). TWM is an X application but it is a Windows 95 executable
that runs on Windows 95. TWM is responsible for the title bar, minimize/maximize
buttons, the border of the window, and the pop-up menu with the list of
window management options.
Another screen shot of Netscape Communicator, but with some minimized
windows. The MicroImages X Server and TWM are somewhat crude for an X-server
program, but fancier X-server programs usually cost money. This one is
free.
